“Sridharji, Namaskar, main Amitabh Bachchan bol raha hoon ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ se.”
My Saturday evening thoughts were pierced with this familiar baritone booming through my earpiece. The Big B was calling me? Like, meee!? But…I mean..how!? Man! This is too cool!
I mumbled and stumbled, my filter kaapi spilling all over the place, and the pati in me had already begun smelling life as a crorepati. In that split second, I visualised my EMI shrinking, my US trip happening and my DSLR being shipped home by Amazon. Aah! Life was beginning to grin at me.
I managed to mutter a “Yes, Yes sir!!” Unable to hide my glee, nervousness and everything in between.
And the Big B continued. He offered me to answer a surprise audience question for a prize of Rs. one-lakh! “Yes of course, sir, I’m getting to talk to you….that’s bigger than any prize, sir,” I stuttered. The question was ridiculously simple and my answer fetched me a lakh rupees! I was grinning big time now, Big B was congratulating me, and I was on cloud nine.
I muttered my thank you’s. He asked me to take care of myself and bid his bye-bye. Just as I was about to hang up, I heard a faint voice at the other end, laughing hysterically and telling someone, “Guess what, he fell for it!”
Suddenly there was more raucous laughter. Those voices sounded familiar!
My mind raced and my eye darted from left to right. It fell on a calendar hung nearby and whoa! I saw the date! “You xixkdjsadflkasdf!” I shouted into the mouthpiece, loud enough for those pals of mine to come on the line, en masse, and shout “Happy April Fool’s Day!!!!”
I cringed at my foolishness and for allowing them to get the better of me. But I also felt happy to be part of a fun thing that brings about so much laughter. I sure felt sad on losing my money though.
Damn, just my bad lakh….
